Mele Kolo Kyari is a Nigerian crude oil marketer, geologist, and the current Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), of the Crude Oil Marketing Division of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Mele Kolo Kyari OFR Biography and Educational Background

Mele Kyari was born on the 8th of January, 1965 in Maiduguri, Borno State. He pursued his secondary education at Government Community Secondary School Biu in Borno State from 1977 to 1982.

Later, in 1987, he successfully earned his Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in geology and earth science from the University of Maiduguri.

From 1987 to 1988, Mr. Kyari served as a Well Site Geologist with the Directorate of Foods, Roads, and Rural Infrastructure (DFRRI) during his National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) tenure.

Career

Following Maikanti Baru\’s retirement from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on July 7, 2019, Kyari was appointed as the 19th Group Managing Director (GMD) by President Muhammadu Buhari\’s administration.

Kyari\’s professional journey began in 1991 when he joined NNPC Processing as a Geophysicist at Integrated Data Services Limited. During the same year, he embarked on his career as a Field Geologist with the Department of Geological Survey of Nigeria.

In 1998, he served as an Exploration Geophysicist at the National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS).

In 2007, Kyari took charge of the Production Sharing Contracts Management within the Crude Oil Marketing Division (COMD). Advancing in his career, he assumed the role of General Manager, at Crude Oil Stock Management in 2014, and in 2015, he was promoted to the position of Group General Manager, COMD.

Notably, he also served as the focal person for the Open Government Initiative, which aimed to track the buyers and sellers of crude oil. Additionally, on May 13, 2018, he assumed the role of the Nigerian National Representative at the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

No, Mele Kyari has not been suspended. There were reports on social media on Saturday, June 10, 2023, that he had been suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, but these reports were later denied by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Limited (NNPC). The NNPC said that Kyari is still in office and that there is no plan to suspend him.

The reports of Kyari\’s suspension came just a day after the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, was suspended by the President. Emefiele had been embroiled in a controversy over his decision to run for president, and his suspension was seen as a way to put an end to the controversy.

It is possible that the reports of Kyari\’s suspension were spread by people who were trying to create a parallel to the Emefiele situation. However, there is no evidence to support this claim.
