Biography and Early Life

Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu was born on June 18, 1965 into the family of Late Chief Sab Anyanwu of Umuduru Anyanwu, Obodo Amaimo, in Ikeduru, Imo State¹. He started his elementary education at School Road Primary School, Aba, obtaining his First School Leaving Certificate in 1977. He then proceeded to Amaimo High School where he got his West Africa School Certificate in 1982². He later attended the University of Port Harcourt where he completed a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in 2001. He furthered his education at the University of Cambridge, Judge Business School and Harvard University Kennedy School, where he obtained a Master’s degree in Political Administration and a Doctorate degree in Business Administration respectively.

Political Career

Samuel Anyanwu began his political career as the Secretary of Imo State Youth Organization (IYO) in 1983. He was also a political leader in the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) and later in the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP).

In 2003, he was appointed as the Transition Committee Chairman of Ikeduru Local Government Council, and then elected as the Executive Chairman of the same council in 2004. He also served as the Secretary of the Imo State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) from 2003 to 2004.

In 2007, he contested for the representation of his constituency at the State House of Assembly and was elected successfully on the platform of the PDP. He was re-elected in 2011 for a second tenure in the State House of Assembly.

During his legislative service, he was the Chairman of the House Committee on Public Accounts and Due Process, and a member of several other committees. He also sponsored and co-sponsored many bills and motions that were beneficial to his constituents and the state.

In 2015, he ran for the Senate seat of Imo East Senatorial District and won the election on the platform of the PDP. He was a member of the Senate committees on Ethics, Privileges and Public Positions, Customs, Exercise, and Tariff, and Petroleum Resources (Downstream). He also initiated and executed many projects and programs that improved the welfare and infrastructure of his senatorial district.

In 2019, he declared his intention to run for the governorship of Imo State, but lost the PDP primary election to Chukwuemeka Ihedioha¹³. He accepted the outcome of the primary and pledged his support to the party and its candidate. He also urged his supporters to remain loyal and committed to the party’s ideals and objectives.
