Biography and Early Life

Jones Onyereri was born on July 15th, 1967 in Nkwerre Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria. He is from a royal family, as his father, Eze Onyereri, was the traditional ruler of Nkwerre. He attended College of the Immaculate Conception, Enugu and graduated in 1983 with a General Certificate of Education (GCE). He proceeded to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry/Microbiology in 1989. In 1998 he obtained a Post-graduate Diploma (PGD) in Marketing from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus. He also obtained a Master’s degree in Marketing from the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus in 2001.

Political Career

Jones Onyereri started his political career in 2011, when he contested for the House of Representatives seat for Isu/Njaba/Nkwerre/Nwangele Federal Constituency. He won the election under the PDP and became a member of the National Assembly. He was re-elected in 2015 and served as the Chairman of the House Committee on Banking and Currency in both the 7th and 8th Assembly. He was also a member of other House Committees such as FCT Area Councils and Ancillary Matters, Electoral Matters and Political Party Matters, and Appropriations. His legislative interest was to ensure law making for good governance.

In 2019, he contested for the Imo West Senatorial District seat but lost to Rochas Okorocha, the former governor of Imo State³. However, he challenged the result of the election at the tribunal and the Court of Appeal, which both declared him the winner and nullified Okorocha’s victory. However, the Supreme Court reversed the lower courts’ decisions and upheld Okorocha’s election in 2020. Jones Onyereri has filed a motion for a judicial review of the Supreme Court’s judgment, seeking to restore his candidature and mandate for the 2023 elections.

In 2023, he was chosen by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, the PDP governorship candidate for Imo State, as his running mate. The duo have been campaigning across the state, promising to make Imo safe again and to deliver good governance, security, and development to the people.
