Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto was born on the 1st of January, 1970 in Tudun Wada at Sokoto metropolis, Sokoto state, Nigeria. He began his education in the Quranic tradition of the Hausa people. He learned reading and writing skills, which laid the foundation for his pursuit of knowledge. He attended primary school at Magajin Rafi Model Primary School from 1977 to 1983, followed by secondary school at Government Secondary School, Yabo, from 1983 to 1989, from where he obtained his West African School Certificate.
To further his career, Ahmed enrolled in the College of Administration at the Polytechnic of Sokoto State. He earned a Clerical Officers Certificate in Accounts and Audit in 1991. His thirst for knowledge led him to return to the same institution in 1991 and 1992, where he obtained a Certificate in Accounts and Audit. Ahmed\’s dedication continued, and he obtained a Professional Diploma in Public Accounts and Audit in 1994.
Seeking more education, Ahmed attended Abdu Gusau Polytechnic in Zamfara State from 1995 to 1997 and earned a Higher National Diploma in Local Government Studies. In 2000, he was admitted to Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto and obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Management. Not stopping there, he pursued a Master\’s degree in Business Administration from the same university between 2002 and 2003.
Despite his demanding roles as an accountant, administrator, and notable politician, Ahmed\’s thirst for knowledge remained unquenched. He enrolled as an undergraduate student at Usman Danfodiyo University from 2004 to 2007 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
Continuing his academic journey, Ahmed joined the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, where he obtained a Master\’s Degree in International Affairs and Strategic Studies from 2009 to 2010. He also holds a Ph.D, certificate from Nasarawa State University, Keffi.
Career and Politics
Ahmed Aliyu, armed with a strong background in accounts and audit, began his career in the Local Government Service Commission of Sokoto State in 1989. Over the years, he held various positions of increasing responsibility. He served as a cashier at Jega Local Government Education Authority from 1989 to 1992 and as an Internal Auditor at Sokoto State House of Assembly from 1992 to 1995. Ahmed also worked as an Accountant in Charge of salary at Wamakko Local Government and as Deputy Director of Finance and Supply at Sabon-Birni Local Government.
In 2002, Ahmed Aliyu became the Director of Finance and Supply at Kebbe Local Government and later served as the Chief Accountant of the Local Government Service Commission from 2004 to 2007.
His career reached new heights when he was appointed as the Honorable Commissioner for the Ministry of Social Welfare and Culture. In this role, he initiated various social investment and skills acquisition programs aimed at empowering the youth and uplifting the destitute. Thousands of unemployed youths were trained and provided with funds and tools to become self-reliant. Ahmed\’s tenure as the Commissioner of Health also saw significant achievements, including the establishment of the Orthopaedic Hospital in Wamakko, the College of Midwifery in Tambuwal, and the rehabilitation of healthcare facilities across the state.
In 2014, Ahmed Aliyu was selected as the running mate to Rt. Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal under the All Progressive Congress (APC) platform. They emerged victorious in the 2015 general elections, with Aminu Waziri Tambuwal as the Governor and Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto as the Deputy Governor of Sokoto State.
While serving as Deputy Governor, Ahmed Aliyu was also entrusted with supervising the Ministry of Works. However, due to political differences with the Governor, he made the decision to resign from his position in November 2018. His resignation was submitted in accordance with the constitutional provision to the Sokoto State House of Assembly.
Ahmad Aliyu Sokoto is the current executive governor of Sokoto State, having been sworn in on the 29th of May, 2023 following his victory in the gubernatorial elections. He won on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) with 453,661, defeating his closest rival, Umar Saidu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who polled 404,632 votes.
