Gawuna began his political career in 1999 when he joined the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). He served as the Chairman of Nassarawa Local Government Area for eight years under the ANPP. In 2014, he was appointed as the Commissioner for Agriculture by former Governor of Kano State Engineer Rabiu Kwankwaso. He retained his position as Commissioner for Agriculture when Abdullahi Umar Ganduje became the Governor of Kano State in 2015.

In 2018, Gawuna was appointed as the Deputy Governor of Kano State by Governor Ganduje after the resignation of the former Deputy Governor Professor Hafiz Abubakar. He served as Deputy Governor of Kano State from 2018 to 2023.

In May 2022, Gawuna became the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress for the 2023 Kano State gubernatorial election. Governor Ganduje anointed him to be his successor in the 2023 Nigeria General Election 123. Gawuna’s victory at the Appeal Court in November 2023 affirmed his victory in the Kano State gubernatorial election, which was held on March 18th, 2023.
