After completing his secondary education, he proceeded to Bayero University, Kano, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science in 1990.

In 2014, he was appointed as the Commissioner for Agriculture by former Governor of Kano State Engineer Rabiu Kwankwaso. He retained his position as Commissioner for Agriculture when Abdullahi Umar Ganduje became the Governor of Kano State in 2015.
In 2018, Gawuna was appointed as the Deputy Governor of Kano State by Governor Ganduje after the resignation of the former Deputy Governor Professor Hafiz Abubakar. He served as Deputy Governor of Kano State from 2018 to 2023.
