George Akume Biography and Educational Background

George Akume was born on the 27th of December, 1953, and hails from Wannune Tarka Council Area of Benue State. In 1978, he successfully earned a Bachelor\’s degree in Sociology from the University of Ibadan, located in Oyo State.

Additionally, he pursued further education and obtained a Master\’s degree in Industrial and Labour Relations (MLR) from the same university in 1986.

Career and Politics

George Akume successfully ran for the position of Governor of Benue State under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform and held office from May 1999 to May 2007. He made history as the first Governor of Benue State to complete two terms in office.

Later, he was elected as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing the Benue North West senatorial district, under the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). From June 2011 to June 2015, he served as the Minority Leader of the Senate. During his tenure in the Red Chamber, he also served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army.

However, in the 2019 elections, Akume lost his senatorial seat to Senator Orke Jev of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Subsequently, on the 21st of August 2019, former President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him as the Minister of Special Duties and Inter-governmental Affairs.

As of June 2023, he currently holds the position of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, having been appointed by President Bola Tinubu.

George Akume is happily married to Regina Akume and the union is blessed with children.

In the 2023 general elections, Regina Akume contested to represent Tarka/Gboko federal constituency in the House of Representatives and won.
